1st Remove any doors and drawers; take off the hinges, pulls and/ or knobs.
Clean everything with TSP, it is found at a local hardware store.
You'll probably have to do this a couple of times.
We like to do this outside as it is messy.
(Follow all safety precautions on the container.)
Next, we use a Smoke Sponge to go over the piece again.
Smoke Sponges can be purchased on Amazon.
Lastly, we go over the piece one more time using a jell called UnSmoke.
UnSmoke can also be purchased off of Amazon.
What is even nicer is that UnSmoke can be used on almost any furniture,
and cabinets to take out small scratches.
Again, follow all safety precautions on all the containers.
Put everything back together and you're done! Good Job!
Grandfather clock with various damage caused during a fire.
You can do this yourself too.
See how the smoke/ soot damage leaves those spots where something was sitting on the dresser during the actual fire?
Well sometimes, no matter how much one cleans. One can still see those areas after you are done.
We think the fire damages pieces differently by the temperature of the smoke.
Usually when we finish the piece looks great, but Not always. Yes, that stinks!
Sometimes the piece just needs to be stripped.
And this happens inside of drawers as well. Those will not come completely clean no matter what you try. The smoke smell will leave, the residue inside the drawers will not.
We are including this picture to give you a heads-up warning.
